• MP’s rail ill Bill

Cathy McGowan (MHR, Indi) is pushing for passenger services to get greater priority on the North East rail line.

MOMENTUM on capturing better passenger rail services for the North East and Border is quickening with Cathy McGowan (MHR, Indi) to table a Bill in Parliament today that will help shore up passenger rail investment.

The National land Transport Amendment Bill 2017, if adopted, will make sure future investment in rail will be done to the standard of freight, but also best practice for passenger rail service, which Ms McGowan said hasn’t happened in the past.

A second point Ms McGowan is perusing is the contract the State Government has with the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC), the entity responsible for track maintenance.

She said both parties are five years in to a 50-year agreement, but this needs to be renegotiated so standards for passenger rail can increase at a measurable rate.
